Lithium Ion batteries ARE more expensive, but they hold a charge longer and are capable of delivering that charge more quickly when needed.
Regards not buying a camera that uses this type of battery becasue in the future they may be harder to find, that may be right, but the life cycle of digital compacts averages at just three to four years. For most users they are unlikely to need to replace a Li-ion battery in that time period due to stoppage! By the way Li-ion is the type of battery many laptops are supplied with. I’d estimate the person you are talking to has had a terrible experience with them, but for the majority of people they work just fine.
If the voltage is right any camera can use Li-ion batteries.
If you can buy the ones with the highest AmpH rating. The higher
that rating the longer they will last in your camera.
